Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: The Doctor and Jack Harkness
When: Couple of days after the memorial service
What: Angst.
Where: Room 210

---

He hadn't been back here in a couple of days. He couldn't look at it, couldn't see her stuff sitting around. The memories of what they'd done together, how they'd lived...

He hadn't slept since the explosion, he needed to, soon, but he was afraid to close his eyes.

He slid the key into the lock and with a deep breath, pushed open the door.

"Jack?" he called, hesitantly, wondering if he would be here, or if he was avoiding the room as well.

There was no race of Rose Tyler visible in the suite. No jacket, no sneakers, no pink hair thingies. Jack packed them away after the funeral service. She's still there, though, flitting through the living area, laughing at something he'd said, being tickled by the Doctor, calling his name when she comes...

Jack Harkness was sitting in a chair, facing the window, his back uncharacteristically to the door. It wasn't as if anyone else would enter this room, other than himself and the Doctor. And he didn't think the Doctor wanted to kill him.

It would be an act of futility, anyway.

He heard the door, heard his name, but he didn't turn around.

"Doctor," he replied quietly.

He closes the door softly behind him, and spots his coat on a chair. He thought he'd lost that, but no, there it is, not a hole in it.

He makes his way around the chair and sits on the couch, not sure where to start.

Jack still didn't look at the Doctor. He stared out the sliding glass doors to the small balcony, where the three of them had enjoyed many a meal. Watching the sunrise, watching the sunset, watching each other.

Being trapped in a resort wasn't his first choice of things to do with his life, but it had given him time with the Doctor and Rose, time he never thought he'd have.

He reminded himself that the Doctor was still Here, though he didn't know where they stood, exactly. Without Rose...

"So," he began quietly, feeling foolish for being awkward. This was the man he loved, after all. "How... How are you doing?"

He sighed, and let his head fall back.

"I ... I don't know," he said, shakily. "I'm... well, could be worse, I suppose."

He looks around the room for a few minutes, lost in thought.

"You?" he asked.

He turned to regard his friend. Why was speaking with him so difficult? He decided to ask.

"Why are we having this problem? This... talking problem?" He chuckled. "I know you probably feel like shit. I sure do. And it could be worse, yeah. You could be dead, too..."

And then, I'd have lost both of you

He sighed.

"Because everything's a problem?" he suggested. "Walking, sitting, standing, lying, breathing, thinking..."

"I'd have regenerated," he sighed. "I still have that."

"I'm sorry Jack," he said. "I'm so sorry."

Jack stands and walks the short distance to the couch. he stops in front of the Doctor and looks him in the eyes.

God, so much pain...

"I'm sorry," he begins, a little shaky. "I... couldn't save her. I tried, it should have worked, Doctor. It should have worked."

He sighed and slid down to one knee. "You only have so many of those left. Great parlour trick, but not bottomless, like mine." He hesitates then places a hand on the Doctor's arm. "Don't waste the lives you have left."

"It's not your fault," he says, his voice shaking too. "You tried, but it isn't your fault," he says, reaching out to touch Jack's face. "You can't save everyone. And I don't blame you Jack, I don't."

He smiles softly. "Suppose you're right," he said. "Still, I have a while left, I hope."

Jack nods. He's very relieved that the Doctor doesn't blame him for Rose's death, but tries not to lose complete control of his emotions.

He still blames himself, of course, but that's another matter entirely.

"Thank you," he says simply, and hopes the Doctor understands. He leans his cheek toward the Time Lord's touch, his eyes watching his friend closely. He looks... so very tired.

"I should hope you have a while left," he says, in mock-indignation. "Just... be careful, and none of us - including you - will get any surprises."

He brushes a thumb along Jack's cheek.

"Me too," he says. "I like this body."

He moves his hand, leans back in the seat, and pats the space beside him.

He isn't sure what to say. Maybe just sitting for a while will help...

He sighs and lifts himself to sit beside the Doctor. He faces front and reaches with his left hand to locate the Doctor's right hand, linking fingers with him.

"It's... a good body," Jack continues quietly, wanting to say something, but uncertain what to say. "I like your body, too."

In his mind, he can see Rose rolling her eyes at him from across the room, sticking her tongue between her teeth, and hear her say, "C'mon, Jack. That's not flirty enough."

He closes his eyes and lets his head drop back against the couch cushions.

"I don't know if I can stay here, Doctor..."

He turns his head to look at Jack, brow furrowed.

"What do you mean?" he asks, slightly panicked. "Stay where? This room? Here?"

He swallows.

"With me?"

He isn't sure he wants yo know the answer.

Jack's eyes snap open and he lifts his head to stare at the Doctor, his fingers tightening on the Time Lord's hand, fighting a sense of panic.

"Doctor... Oh, God, unless you tell me you never want to see me again, I am never going to leave you."

And he leans over, cups the Doctor's cheek tenderly with one hand, and kisses him gently on the lips.

He's relieved, and kisses him back, just as gently, before pulling away.

"So.. you mean the room?" he guesses. "Well, Here too, I suppose, but we don't seem to have a choice about that..."

He nods and rests his head on the Doctor's shoulder.

"I know we can't leave Here, not easily," he says quietly. "I mean... I mean the room." He swallows. "I see her everywhere. I know... that isn't likely to stop any time d=soon, but in this space in particular..."

Jack trails off, unable to finish without losing control. Its still too fresh. Here, they were Three, and now -

Now, he hopes they are Two...

He nods.

"Yeah," he said. "We'll see if we can move," he says, looking around the room. He can still see her, here, smiling at him.

Jack nods. "I'm sure we can sort something out with the management," he says. "For all I know, we just... sign in the book again." He glances at the Doctor. "Do you... do you still want to share a room?"

"Of course," he says, as if it's obvious they would. He would have thought Jack wouldn't have to ask after his reaction earlier to the thought of him leaving.

He couldn't lose anyone else.

Jack gives him a brilliant smile.

"Thank you, Doctor, for... being fantastic." He kisses the Time Lord again, and counts his blessings that he didn't lose them both. Moving on hasn't been easy so far - he didn't think it would be - but at least he isn't alone.
